Mark Tanner is a Senior Principal Engineer for M&M Engineering, a division of Acuren Inspection, Inc.  He is responsible for failure/forensic analyses, mechanical analyses, and metallurgical examinations on a variety of industrial equipment.  Mr. Tanner also conducts on-site root cause failure investigations of components at a range of facilities, including chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, utility, heavy manufacturing, food, and commercial establishments.  He has coordinated more than 350 analyses in his career and peer reviewed over 1500. Over the last 15 years he has primarily been involved in large failure investigations that require extensive on-site investigation and often reconstruction of the failed components to determine the origin of failure. His most notable large investigation was working with the Columbia Accident Investigation Board at Kennedy Space Center as their on-site failure analyst examining debris at the reconstruction hangar.

Mr. Tanner also provides assistance in the area of risk assessment of complex industrial equipment. With his background as a failure analyst, he helps with the identification and quantification of risk associated with the maintenance, operation, inspection, monitoring, history, and engineering practices applied to complicated equipment.  He was the project leader on developing three software programs that address risk assessment of steam turbines, centrifugal compressors, and generators.  He received his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees from Texas A&M University in 1984 and 1986, respectively.  Mr. Tanner is a registered professional engineer and ASM International – Member (former Failure Analysis Committee chairman), ASME – Member (Post-Construction Subcommittee on Inspection Planning – Risk Assessment), API 691 – Member (Risk Based Machinery Management). He has authored or co-authored 21 published papers and given 12 invited technical presentations.
